From 3G USB dongle to 3.75G Mifi Devices
Connecting a laptop to the Internet while out could only be done at a WiFi hotspot - then came along the mobile broadband 3G dongle allowing access anywhere. These were all well and good where the signal was great, but it needs to be plugged into the laptop which doesn't always have the best location for obtaining a great signal.
A new dawn of mobile broadband came along, where these 3G dongles could be fitted to a wireless mobile router designed solely for turning these dongles into a portable hotspot. They were usually bulky, hardly portable despite their claims and needed to be connected to a power supply at all times.
These combined devices have paved the way for the next generation of mobile broadband products which are more portable, along with being more resourceful within their possibilities without the bulky design and need for constant power - the new term MiFi, a combination of Mobile broadband and WiFi. This effectively is a portable mobile wireless router and 3G dongle card all in one, with a battery of its own, and is very small, highly portable and very useful to have and use compared to a dongle.
Operating a MiFi device is simply turning on the device with the power button and it auto configures itself. Next, enter the password to log into the wireless network. The Mifi can be charged via a USB able connected to a USB port or a AC power dapater.
Although the MiFi unit do not offer the reach of a home or office wireless router, the portability may be appealing enough to those who want the mobility of internet connectivity, without having to stick a 3G USB stick to the laptop or those with gadgets without a USB port such as tablets. Our test of the latest Mifi from Huawei E586 was impressive. While the specification indicated a donwload speed of up to 21Mbps, we found the donwload speed good when a 7.2Mbps SIM plugged in. Compare to inserting the SIM card into a E585, the E586 is clearly better and faster.
